How Not to Approach a Publisher (or anyone for that matter)

A couple of months ago we received the following message:

Maybe I’m getting irritable in my old age, but this struck me as an incredibly entitled message. Still, I don’t like not replying to an email, but don’t have a lot of time to create a marketing plan for unsolicited enquiries, so I sent what I thought was the next best thing – some advice:

And do you know what their reply was?

Nothing.

Sweet FA.

So if you’re reading this wondering how not to approach a publisher, this is it.

If anyone you’ve asked for advice takes the time to respond to you, even if it’s not the advice that you wanted to receive, just hit reply and say thanks. It will take you less time than it took for the person you emailed to send you their advice - and it's polite.
